What does light deficiency mean?

Light deficiency means we are not getting sufficient light for optimal health. Light, preferably natural light, is important for our health. There are many reasons we might not receive adequate light. For example, we may spend too much time indoors, or, even if we’re outdoors, it may be gray and dark out, as it frequently is during the winter. Working the graveyard shift, or traveling to other time zones, can also deprive us of the light we need in our life. Common conditions related to light deficiency are Winter Blues, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), shift work, and jet lag. When natural light isn’t available, light therapy devices such as YumaLite™ can provide a source of light.

What are the common symptoms of light deficiency?


Symptoms stemming from light deficiency include sadness, lethargy, over-sleeping, over-eating, weight gain, difficulty concentrating and diminished libido (sex drive). These symptoms can range from mild to severe.

What is light therapy?


Light therapy involves regular exposure (usually 30 minutes or more daily) to light, either natural light or light from an artificial source, such as YumaLite™, designed to give us the therapeutic benefits of light. Light therapy is used to help us make up for a lack of light in our lives and address symptoms associated with light deficiency.

Is light therapy effective?


Most people using light therapy to treat the symptoms of Winter Blues and SAD feel an improvement. Because of the effectiveness of light therapy, doctors and therapists commonly recommend it for patients experiencing Winter Blues and SAD, as well as light deficiency symptoms related to shift work and jet lag.

How does light therapy work?


Light affects our mood through its impact on our body clock. Our body clock refers to the internal systems inside our body that regulate our physical and mental functions over the course of a day, known as our circadian rhythms. Light establishes our body clock by affecting various hormones in our body, including hormones that tell us to wake up or go to sleep. Specialized cells in the retina at the back of our eyes, called photosensitive ganglion cells, interpret light/dark and carry this information to the brain signaling the release of various hormones. At night, when no light is detected, the eye sends the signal to the pineal gland in the brain to begin releasing melatonin, which causes us to feel sleepy. Because melatonin is only produced in humans at night, it is known as the ‘hormone of darkness’. In the morning, when light hits our eyes, our brain tells our body to stop making melatonin, and instead to start producing serotonin, another hormone, typically called the happiness hormone because it gives us a ‘lift’ in our day.

Exposure to enough light in the morning and afternoon, and darkness at night, helps our body clock work properly so we feel normal. But in the fall and winter, when the sun comes up later in the morning and sets early in the evening or hides behind gray clouds day after day, our brain doesn’t receive the signals it should, when it should. When that’s the case, our body continues to produce too much of the sleep hormone, melatonin, while we’re awake, making us feel lethargic, and too little of the happiness hormone, serotonin, making us feel less than good. But melatonin controls more than just sleep for us. It also regulates reproduction, behaviour, hair growth, hunger, and libido (our sex drive). So when our body clock gets out of whack, these other aspects of our lives are impacted. Furthermore, the lack of light affects other hormones, such as insulin and ghrelin, which control our appetite. With our body clock derailed, we may feel, to varying degrees, any of the symptoms of light deficiency—sadness, lethargy, over-sleeping, over-eating, weight gain, difficulty concentrating and diminished libido (sex drive). When natural light isn’t available, light from a specially designed light source like YumaLite™ can play the role the sun normally would. Using YumaLite™ to replace the lost light in our life can help us keep our body clock working as it should so that we feel more like we would during the spring and summer.

Is light therapy safe?


Clinical studies by leading institutions over the past 25 years have shown that using light therapy is safe. Studies conducted using light therapy via visors show little to no side effects.

What are the side effects of light therapy?


While very few side effects (and none significant) have ever been reported, some users have indicated that they have felt eye strain, headaches, and extra stimulation. If this occurs simply try switching the colour light you are using or decreasing your treatment times. Side effects tend to go away after a few days of exposure. If symptoms persist discontinue use and consult your doctor.

What is the difference between Winter Blues and SAD?

Winter Blues is a general term used to describe the blahs most of us feel during the winter. With Winter Blues we might feel mild forms of the symptoms of light deficiency. For example, we might feel a little down, want to sleep a little longer than usual, eat more foods high in carbohydrates. Our energy, enthusiasm and productivity may drop off as well.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)—a type of mood disorder characterized by more severe forms of Winter Blues symptoms. It is recognized by medical professionals and experts as a common mood disorder that affects people during the fall and winter months. People with SAD may feel constantly down and extremely fatigued. They may have difficulty concentrating, causing problems at work or at home. They may withdraw socially, over-sleep, gain weight and experience a decrease in their libido (sex drive). People who suffer from Winter Blues and SAD see their symptoms go away during the spring and summer.

How common are Winter Blues and SAD?

As many as 90% of people in the US and Canada experience some of the symptoms of Winter Blues. Of that group of more than 300 million people in the United States and Canada, 5% suffer from a more severe form of Winter Blues known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and 10 to 20% suffer from sub-Syndromal Seasonal Affective Disorder (S-SAD), a milder form of SAD. Women are generally twice as likely to be affected by SAD and S-SAD, and the average age of onset is 23.

Do I use red or white light?


Studies have shown that there is little difference in the effectiveness of white light or red light when treating symptoms of light deficiency, such as Winter Blues. Some people, however, prefer one over the other. Try them both and see which suits you better. Either option will help give you brighter days.

How long do I use it for?


We recommend up to 30 minutes a day at least. Of course, we know you are busy, so any time you can manage will help. You may use YumaLite™ more than once in a day or for longer than 30 minutes but we do recommend that you avoid using YumaLite™ at night as this may interfere with your sleep patterns and that you limit use to 90 minutes per day. You know your body best, so judge for yourself what feels right. If your eyes feel tired, lessen your treatment time.

When should I use my YumaLite™?


We recommend using YumaLite™ in the morning. Think of it as a way of mimicking the light we would normally be exposed to on a summer morning. Light at that time of day tells our body that it’s time to wake up. This happens because light signals our brain to stop producing melatonin—the sleep hormone. Melatonin is what makes us feel sleepy and if our body doesn’t get the signal from light in the morning to stop producing it, we will find it hard to get going. Light in the morning helps our body function normally. Feel free to use your YumaLite™ again during the afternoon. Some people find a second exposure of light at this time helps them get through the day. We do not recommend using YumaLite™ in the evening as this is when you want your body to shut down for the night. In the absence of light, your body will start producing melatonin, making you feel tired.

Symptoms of light deficiency stem from the body clock being out of whack. Using YumaLite™ in the morning and afternoon, but not in the evening, will help you entrain your body’s internal clock to get back on track.

What can I do while I’m using my YumaLite™?


Quite a lot. One of the major benefits of YumaLite™ is that you don’t have to sit in front of a stationary light box. You can use it while getting ready in the morning, having breakfast, making lunches, putting on makeup, taking out the garbage or while reading, watching TV, talking on the phone. You can even use it while going for a walk. However, we recommend that you avoid using it anywhere you might need total focus such as driving, running or operating large machinery. Do not use your YumaLite™ anywhere it might sustain water damage.

What tips will help me get the most benefit from my YumaLite™?


Incorporating your YumaLite™ into some of your routine activities will help ensure that you use it regularly. If you routinely eat breakfast, go on your computer, or read the paper in the morning, try using your YumaLite™ then.

Keep your YumaLite™ in a spot where you will see it when you wake up. This will help remind you to use it. Also, keep it where it is easily accessible. A night table or dresser might be a handy spot.

Replace the batteries as soon as they wear out.

Keep your bedroom dark at night. Using blackout blinds over any windows will keep the light out. This will help you sleep more soundly. In the morning, open the blinds and use your YumaLite™. Before technology changed how humans lived, we had adapted to the natural world, which was dark at night and light in the morning and afternoon. Mimicking this natural contrast between dark and light over the course of a day helps our body functionally normally.

Where should I shine the light?


YumaLite™ has a tilting mechanism which allows you to direct the light. Position the visor so that the light angles toward your eyes the same way sunlight would. For light therapy to be effective the light needs to hit your retina, which is at the back of your eyes, so you need to keep your eyes open, but you do not need to look directly into the light. However, it won’t harm you to glance occasionally at the light source.

Can anyone use it?


YumaLite™ is safe to be used by all ages for anyone experiencing symptoms of light deficiency, such as Winter Blues. However, if you suffer from depression or have been diagnosed with any mood disorder, you should speak to your doctor before using any treatment including YumaLite™. YumaLite™ is not intended to replace any treatment plan prescribed by a doctor. Can I replace the batteries?


Absolutely, simply read the instructions in the user manual. Download a copy of the Instruction Manual. One tip for replacing the batteries is to place the batteries in the battery compartment one at a time from left to right. Be cautious when positioning batteries not to pull on battery compartment.

What is the light source?


The device uses light-emitting diodes (LEDs), an inexpensive, lightweight and effective light source.

What is the intensity or lux of the lights?


The white lights emit 800 lux and the red lights emit 80 lux. Lux is the measure of the intensity of a light source. These light intensities have a proven therapeutic effect. Please note that YumaLite™ is a light visor in which the source of light is closer to the eyes than would be the case with a traditional light box.
